Mozy 0n over to the Backup
Over the past 11 years that I’ve been in business, I’ve seen loads of hard drives fail. I would say in about 50% (or more), the computer has not been backed up. In about 80% of these times, we can recover the data. For 10% of the drives, these can be recovered with an expensive data recovery service at the prices starting at $1,900. The last 10% cannot be recovered. So, why not make it easy and pain free on yourself and click on over to Mozy, the easy to use, free/low cost method of backing up. On the home page of Mozy, they show comparisons of themselves and all the leading back up sites – where they come out ahead.
To use Mozy, you first sign up for a free 2G account or a $4.95/month – all you can backup plan. I have 2 “all you can eat” plans and have about 60G of data backed up. For those of you with extensive music collections, this is the way to go – for backing up those precious, expensive (a la iTunes or other music store site) songs. Once you sign up, you download the easy-to-use program. Once downloaded, click on the program and follow the easy to use prompts. It selects all the data it thinks you want backed up. You have the option to add more if you wish. It will then try to back up every hour. If it finds you’re using computer, it will not backup. If you aren’t it will start the backup.
The first backup can take up to 3 weeks depending on the speed of your connection. Mine took about 2 weeks. The great thing about Mozy is that you can adjust the speed of the backup while you’re on the computer with a simple slider, choosing either “Faster Backup” or “Faster Computer.”
Recovering your files is easy and can be done in 3 ways. You can click on file and say “restore with Mozy,” you can go to the web and download the files, they’ll send you a DVD via Fed Express (expensive).
Mozy works with both Windows and Macs. The Mac version is in beta, but works just great. The interface is a little rough, but the backup portion works just fine and you get a free 4 G not 2 G account! For a change, Mac users get the leg up on the Windows version.
So, for $4.95 or $50/year – what are you waiting for – go out a Mozy!
