It's been a constant yearning of mine to have a great on-line tool for project management, calendar & contact management. I have consultants I work with all over the
US and I like to keep track of schedules and contacts with them. I've given you many choices to do a little research and see which one best fits your needs or your companies needs. I've used iTeamwork and WebOs and prefer iTeamwork. When signing up for any of these Free services, I suggest you use your SPAM email account, not your regular one as to make revenue, they will probably sell your e-mail address. WORD OF WARNING: As there has recently been a tremendous shakeout in free photo sharing sits, there will most likely be one in this arena as well. If you begin to rely on one of these site, make constant backups and printouts in case they one day go under. I read one heartbreaking story as one of the latest photo sharing sites went under and a father had his only photos on one of those site.

For all new clients, have we got a deal for you! To kick off your new year right, we're offering you $25 off your first visit with us at your home or office. If we haven't visited you in the past year, you qualify for this discount as well (Don't worry, current clients, you'll be getting a separate deal via e-mail as well). For those of you outside the SF Bay Area, including those of you outside the United States, we offer you your first e-mail tech support question, answered within 8 hours, free of charge (a US$15 value!). To take advantage of this offer, we'll need your home city, state and zip code for verification purposes. These offers ends Jan 31, 2002.

ANIMAL RIGHTS

Animals - we all love them. We have them as pets. We like seeing them in the Zoo and in the Circus. Some of you like to eat them and hunt them (to the best of my knowledge, I can't figure out why). Please view these sites and do what you can to give our 2, 3, 4, 5+ legged friends a hand.

Defenders of Wildlife
http://www.defenders.org/

Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the protection of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities. Focus on two major issues: the accelerating rate of extinction of species and the associated loss of biological diversity, and habitat alteration and destruction.

Turtle Survival Alliance

Help save freshwater Turtle and Tortoises worldwide.
This one is for you Meryl(s)....lover of turtles....

Ringling Brothers - How they treat their animals
http://www.circuses.com/ringling.html

Sadly, it's not all fun and games for the animals here. My recommendation is to go on a wild country safari, shooting only photos, to see wild animals. Or watch the Discovery or Animal channels on cable.

IDENTITY THEFT

Credit Report with Scores - Credit Management and Protection

Free Information on Identity Theft
http://www.stolen-identity.com/
Identity Theft.gov
http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/

A huge problem since the web has made it way to easy to publish our private information! There are great tips and steps to take in these sites so you can keep a jump ahead of the criminals. Bottom line: Don't give your social security number out, unless you have to (bank, government, stock brokerages). Don't give your mother's maiden name out either. Once a crook has your SS# and your mother's maiden name, they can usually become "you" and start on a shipping spree. One other tip, don't carry your whole checkbook. Only carry 1-2 checks. Once a checkbook is stolen, the crook will start writing checks against your account immediately and it's very difficult to stop them in the short term.

Q&A - Answers to Questions you have asked!

Q: I am a new member to this group.  I have what most of you will probably consider a simple question.  How can I password protect a  MS Word file while using it under Windows NT 4.0?  I want it to ask for a password each time it is opened. Is there a program that I can download to accomplish this?

A: Using almost any version of Microsoft Word (and probably other word related documents), you can password protect documents in 2 ways. You can make it so someone with the password can read it, but cannot modify it or can read it and modify it. On Word 2000, when saving go to "Tools, General Proprieties." This is where you can enter either password. If you have another version, go to the Help screen and type in "password" for assistance.

Q:
I'm using Explorer 5.0 as my browser, and each time I open it, the text comes up too small. I have to go to View Text Size and change it from Smaller to Medium each time I open the browser. Any way to make Medium the default?

A: This is a common problem in Microsoft's Internet Explorer. This bug appears to be fixed in Internet Explore 6.0.  I would suggest you update to the latest version.

IN THE NEWS

Consumer Electronics Show

Tons of new goodies have come out of this show which you'll be seeing over the next year.

The biggest buzz seemed to be about the eWare Panasonic Goodies, where they allow you to record and play music, video and still photos.

PalmSource Conference and Expo - February 6th & 7th
http://www.palmsource.com/

This is sure to be a major PALM Fest! It will be happening for 2 fun-filled days at the
San Jose Convention Center. If you just want to go to product booths it's only $25 if you register by Feb 1, 2002.  Curious which vendors will be there: http://www.palmsource.com/solutions.html I'll be giving you a full review of the conference when I return. I highly recommend you attend this conference if you're in to Palm Products, which continually blow away Windows Pocket PC devices, with their innovative hardware and software products for every use you can think of and more!! If you're wanting to learn loads more about the Palm, go for the conferences as well.

AOL reportedly in talks to purchase Red Hat Linux
http://news.com.com/2100-1001-819243.html

Rumor or Fact?
I have mixed feelings about this if it happens.  On the one hand, I hate the fact that AOL dumbs down the Internet for many users and introduces lots of problems by not giving users direct access to the Internet. On the other hand, I'm tired of Microsoft releasing mediocre products because they have no motivation to release superb products which are bug free and impenetrable to hackers. All in all, I'm a big proponent of the "free market" and in the long run, a good battle between Linux and Windows would give the consumers a victory and the developers and consultants more latitude to make and support better products.
