Welcome to
another newsletter. I believe I got all the kinks worked out of this new system
- sorry 'bout the typos and little boxes last time. I've learned just how bad
Microsoft Word is as an HTML editor. I've been hearing about it for years -
never needed it for this type of assignment before. I'm going to be working with
a new Macromedia product which I'll report on in future issues. For now, enjoy
the info presented here, subscribe to my cool new downloading center and enjoy
the holiday month taking life easier then you would normally - the planet needs
it!
Cheers, Clyde

SPAM
(Unwanted email variety) - We all HATE SPAM
Yes, I've written about it here
before and I'll probably write about it again. As we find ways to combat spam,
the spammers figure out ways to get around our system. I'm going to be talking
about some general methods of not getting SPAM in the first place (by hiding
your email address - having a secondary and third one ) then we'll talk about
products to use to combat SPAM. My friend Ann will be coming out with a very
comprehensive guide on SPAM soon which I'll be sharing with you all when it's
published. Until then, I offer you the following websites for you education and
use.
SPAM - Educate
Yourself
PCWorld.com - How to Take
Back Your Privacy http://www.pcworld.com/features/article/0,aid,92895,00.asp PCWorld.com
- Spam Begone http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,80604,00.asp Pobox:
How To Deal With Spam http://www.pobox.com/nospam.html
Very good reading
above - giving you lots of tricks and tips so Spammers can't find you.
A
few tips from experience:
1. Secondary Email Account - Sign up for
www.yahoo.com or www.hotmail.com account.
These are 100% free. Give all fake info when signing up to protect your privacy,
thought don't forget password or you won't remember "trigger" data for password
reminders. Use these accounts for Yahoo! Groups, News Groups, Mailing Lists,
Ebay, Craig's list. 2. Get your own "domain name" email address, then block
default "@yourdomainname.com" account. This is a spammer favorite. 3. Don't
ever respond to "to remove yourself from this list....". This will get you on
their list. 4. Get off AOL. They seem to have the highest incident of SPAM of
any ISP I run into and have poor SPAM blocking unless you block everyone not on
your address list - not very effective. 5. When downloading eval software,
use a dummy email address - unless they'll be mailing you a code. In this case,
use secondary email address. 6. Sign up for www.pobox.com account - inexpensive way to have your own
email address. Has lots of safeguards.
To get more tips - read the above
articles very carefully. There's good stuff on privacy protection as
well.

SPAM - We HATE YOU -
Products
McAfee.com - SpamKiller - $40
- Clyde's Pick http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/msk/ EmC 5.0 - Free http://www.abreuretto.com/anti-spam/indexi.htm Email
Express! - Free http://www.privacylabs.net/EmailExpress/index.shtml MailFrontier
- $30 http://www.mailfrontier.com/ MailWasher - Free http://www.webattack.com/get/mailwasher.shtml
SpamAssassin
Pro - $30 http://deersoft.com/ SpamPal for Windows - Free http://www.spampal.org.uk/
There are all types of
SPAM products. Some cost money, some are free. They all work in different
manners. You have to find the one that works best for you. Some are Outlook
Plug-ins which work directly with the email product. - Spam Assassin and Mail
Frontier are like this. Most are stand alone products. My favorite - until
proven otherwise, is McAfee. It works with all Pop3 clients (no web-based or
AOL), has an intuitive interface. It catches about 80% of my SPAM, which is not
bad. It's highly configurable and you can add your own filters based on Subject
and domain names. It's better then "rules" and "filters" because it comes with
hundreds of pre-set filters which the biggies don't catch. Personally, I find
setting rules/filters to catch SPAM a complete waste of time.
