Wireless
Connectivity
Wireless is the HOT topic these days. Why? Because
once you as a user are un tethered from the wired Internet experience you can
move about - in your home, your office, the world - without wires!
There
are 2 aspects of wireless connectivity - in the home/office environment and
while traveling. The underlying technology is the same, one requires more work
to set up. When in your home/office - you need to set up a wireless broadcasting
device (usually under $100 these days) which connects to your high speed access
line. This technology doesn't work with dial-up service. Once your Internet is
running through this device, you can hook up numerous wireless devices to it -
be it a desktop or laptop computer - wireless print server - even wireless Palm
and Pocket PC enabled devices.
The second aspect of the technology is
what happens when you leave your home or office with your wireless enabled
device (WED). Your WED lets you pick up wireless signals from either established
business wireless Internet provider or just by being in the proximity of a
business or household who has not locked down their wireless signal from being
broadcast in their neighborhood. These locations which provide wireless Internet
service (dubbed WiFi) are called "hot spots." On of the most public (and
expensive) providers of WiFi service is Starbucks (powered by T-mobile). There's
a HUGE movement to provide Hot Spots for free as an enticement to visit an
establishment or just give the world free Internet access. For an example,
over the last 2 weeks, I was at a restaurant and a cafe that offer WiFi at no
charge. Want to know more about the workings of WiFi? Check out: http://www.weca.net/.

Palm has
come roaring back with a full suite of new handheld devices. They've added a new
Zire model which has a cool new color screen, built-in camera, audible player
for recorded books and a MP3 player. The Tungsten Series of Palm Handhelds are
quite impressive as well - having been introduced one by one over the last few
months. Two of the Tungstens (with the exception of the Tungsten W) have the new
Palm OS 5.0 and above which gives speed and more efficient functionality in your
handheld device. The 3 devices have the following in common - color screens,
wireless web (either via WiFi or cellular networks), email, SMS text messaging,
SD and MMC (Memory Expansion slots). Once you have this base, they diverge from
their into pretty cool devices - including the first 2 Palm devices with
built-in keyboards.
Best news of all - trade in almost any handheld
device for a new Palm Zire or Palm Tungsten and get US$50/$80CDN:
