This and That Technology Tips
Winzip Security, Smaller Computers, Music Update & some Humor
March 1st 2004
Thanks for all the wonderful replies from the last
newsletter about portable music. It sounds like lots of you are thinking of
getting a player - about 10% of you actually have one (either iPod or portable
CD player). Hope my last analysis helps out in future decision-making process -
knowing there are lots of choices out there. We talk about another serious
security breach (and easy fix), very small computers (hybrids of palm and
laptops), a music update since the release of the iPod mini and some things to
laugh/cry about.
Enjoy,

As before,

Winzip

WinZip® - WinZip 9.0 Fixes a Security Issue with

Winzip http://www.winzip.com/downwzeval.htm
A very
serious security flaw has been discovered that allows malicious attacks to
come through Winzip attachments (isn't anything sacred)? I know many of you use
Winzip and we install it on all client's machines. The new version 9.0 which
came out within the past few weeks is a necessary update to avoid this security
breach. I highly recommend everyone buy the product as it's a hassle to have the
big "EVALUATION COPY" every time you open program. It's only US$29 for first
machines; $22/each additional machine).
Music
Update
Emusic - Buying Music - unrestricted MP3
tracks http://www.emusic.com/genre/1.html
Thought I
highlight this great "alternative" site for downloading music. Lesser known
artists - still great music - 50% of all purchased music goes directly to the
artists. You can share this music with others and burn and transfer to your
portable music device as often as you like.
Locked in to music format -
alternatives to iPod http://money.cnn.com/2004/02/18/technology/ipods_0403/
Problems
with downloading music - you get stuck in a single format and you can't get out
without paying a huge cost.
Walmart.com - Music Downloads http://musicdownloads.walmart.com/catalog/servlet/MainServlet
Who
would have thunk it? Walmart gets into the action with 88 cent downloads,
undercutting Apple (and the rest) by 12% or so. Watch for Yahoo!, Microsoft and
Amazon to get into the fray quite soon.

How much is this blasted war

instead of this war? Do the comparisons - you'll be shocked!

Incredible
Shrinking Computers
Sony CLI?Handheld, $600 http://sonyelectronics.sonystyle.com/micros/clie/models/ux50.html
This
incredible handheld - reviewed last August http://www.itmcomputing.com/newsletter/2003-08-25.php is
currently the handheld computer to beat. The cool thing is that it's come down
about $150 since August and still packs a punch for a mini computer with
wireless, bluetooth, camera, movie and music player and camera.
Flip
Start: Incredible Handheld Computer http://www.flipstartpc.com/
Unreleased product - but
amazing to look out - has everything Sony does and more. It's a true Windows XP
machine that fits in the palm of your hand. Rumor has it the cost will be high -
around $1,700. Has wireless and bluetooth functionality. Large hard drive (30
GB) and 256 MB RAM make this comparable to most middle -range laptop
computers.
We now feature products which we recommend for
purchase. All products on this page are products we have thoroughly tested and
are most likely used on a daily basis. In your daily life, there are lots of
choices out there when you are purchasing products. We make it simple by having
just 1 product in each category.
We have the following
products: - Entertainment Book - full of thousands of $$ of coupons for
your American city - DVD rentals delivered to your door - Send newsletters
like this one to hundreds of people - Access to your work computer from home
and your home computer while on vacation - See when your emails have been
read (easier then "return receipt") - Transfer addresses quite easily from a
web page or email into Act/Outlook/Outlook Express or Quicken/Quickbooks.
Lots of fun/productivity tools - all ITM approved.

Portable Player Comparison Chart - in Excel and Acrobat
formats
I've done a summary of the most important points
of the players mentioned in last month's article, but have not covered every
single aspect of each player. For an in-depth comparison of all popular players
on market (as of 2/2004), sign up for a trial version of the ITM Software
Support Center. Here you will find the analysis in Acrobat format: www.itmcomputing.com/software - scroll down to "free trial"
- fill out the form and send. You'll get a user name and pwd emailed to you
within 48 hours.
If you like the idea of an up-to-date software update
service (getting great utilities that our customers cannot live without) -
subscribe for 6 or 12 months - you'll get the aforementioned MP3 comparison
in Acrobat and Excel with either of these membership options, so you can
update the information and re-sort according the variable of most interest to
you (I've sorted on price). For those of you with a subscription, you'll find
both files in the download center under your normal log-in.************************
Hope you enjoyed the ride....
