Firefox - Time for an Update

May 12th, 2005 Over the last several months, there have been several updates to Firefox and the extensions. The current version of Firefox is 1.0.4.

Most updates have been security updates, but the best feature has been that the updater has improved. After you do this update, you'll start seeing a little icon under the "x" to close the program (and to the left of the circle) which means you have updates.

For extra safety, you might want to back up your Firefox profile (this contains your bookmarks, passwords and more)

To manually update your version of Firefox, do the following:

1. Open Firefox.

2. Select Tools, Options

3. Click on the "advanced" tab - looks like a gear.

4. Click Check Now for software update. You'll need to run this twice - once to update the program and once to update your extensions and themes.

If you don't have Firefox - and you're running on a PC, Mac, or Linux computer, why not?

One of the many cool things about Firefox is the way you can customize it to fit your needs. You can change the way it looks with themes or change the way you interact with it using extensions. Want to know more about Firefox - go to our detailed newsletter from January: http://www.itmcomputing.com/newsletter/2005-01-25.php

Check out Clyde's cool extension list: www.itmcomputing.com/firefoxfun. This consolidates all my favorites. One thing I've learned: Don't use too many extensions or they will conflict with each other and cause Firefox instability.
