Where’s Clyde Been?
That’s a very good question. For the last 1.5 weeks, I’ve been
on the road with my friend Vindu. The trip was inspired by Vindu’s move
across the country for a one year fellowship at the University of Michigan.
For most of the time on our trip, I’ve been in a little red 2 seater sports
car, a Honda S2000 ( http://tinyurl.com/6gcn9)
, traveling from California to Minneapolis, Minnesota: beginning in Sunnyvale,
California on August 7, 2005 with stops in Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana, South
Dakota and arriving in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 16, 2005. We drove for
over 3,000 miles in a ten day period. The “as the crow flies” mileage
is just over 2,000 miles. We were in no rush (until our last couple of days),
so we spread the trip out and saw Heartland of America.
Please read about our adventures at http://www.itmcomputing.com/roadtrip2005
Although our trip is over (I’m still in Minneapolis vacationing, though),
keep checking back as we’ll be sharing our “lessons learned”
and “technology tips.”

The Latest Worm/Virus
Yesterday, a new virus (really a worm – as it didn’t need to come
through email), was unleashed on the always unsuspecting public. If you’re
a Windows XP user (who’s done all your Windows patches, through Service
Pack 2) or a Mac/Linux user, there is no need to worry. If you’re a Windows
2000 Professional user who hasn’t been keeping up-to-date with your windows
patches, you were/are the most vulnerable. The patch for this worm was posted
by Microsoft over a week ago http://tinyurl.com/ds3qc
. If you have Windows 2000 Pro – patch it now – if you haven’t
done so already. The major difference between worms and viruses is that worms
can go from one computer to another (especially if the computers don’t
have software firewall product enabled) on a network without using email.
Background information on worm

Bloomberg: http://tinyurl.com/8hxju
Google News: http://tinyurl.com/dm9ux
According to Business Week Online
Among the companies effected by the worm and its variations were ABC, CNN, The
Associated Press, The New York Times and Caterpillar, Incorporated. In California,
San Diego County said it needed to cleanse 12,000 computers of the bug.
If you’re concerned at all, update your anti-virus, run it and make sure
that your firewall is protecting you.
Firewall test: http://tinyurl.com/sovd,
use “common ports” (you want to get “pass” rating).
If only Ident 113 is “closed” not stealthed, it’s not a big
concern.
