Happy New Year - Now patch your Windows

January 5th, 2006

Happy New Year! Hope you had a wonderful holiday season.

A quick one for today - please check your system to see if you're vulnerable for the latest MS security breach. This one is quite serious. Basically, if you go to a deceptive website, you can get a virus - just by visiting the website without clicking on a thing. This is called the Windows Meta files (WMF) exploit.

Microsoft found this on 12/27/05 and isn't going to officially patch it until Jan 10th. Download this patch and when MS comes out with update, you can leave this on your system, even after MS update.

To test your system to see if patch is needed, download the test: Download Ilfak's WMF Vulnerability test from GRC

Then if you are vulnerable, run the patch: Download Ilfak's WMF patch utility from GRC

These can be download from website: http://www.grc.com/sn/notes-020.htm

Then if you are vulnerable, run the patch: These can be download from website: For further information: www.timeatlas.com/mos/Web_Sites/General/WMF_Exploits_and_SiteAdvisor (Very easy to read explanation)
