Dealing with tomorrow's inevitable worm -
The Black Worm/Kama Sutra Virus

February 2, 2006

As you've no doubt heard by now, a new virus/worm called "the black worm" or the "kama sutra virus" is due tomorrow, Friday, February 3, 2006 to attack all flavors of Windows computers (Mac & Linux users are safe - this time). To protect yourself, make sure your anti-virus and firewall products are up-to-date. Make sure to run an update on your Norton/Symantec product, as they don't autoupdate the way they are supposed to. Our current favorite product is Trend Micro's PC-Cillin 2006 Internet Security Suite. Strangely, it wasn't even reviewed in this comparison http://tinyurl.com/befzd of the Security Suites. My guess is that it's so good, it's beyond comparison!

There is no need to buy additional products beyond an anti-virus and a firewall product - the free ones AVG and Zone Alarm should (I can't guarantee anything) protect you. If you want warm fuzzies and more protection, you might want to upgrade to either Zone Alarm Pro www.zonealarm.com and AVG Pro www.grisoft.com. If you want to try something new, Remove AVG/Zone Alarm combination and install PC-Cillin Internet Security Suite 2006 www.antivirus.com . It's NEVER a good idea to have more the 1 anti-virus or firewall product on your computer at the same time.

The worm can come in as any of these names:
CME-24, Win32.Blackmal.F [Computer Associates], Email-Worm.Win32.Nyxem.e [F-Secure], Email-Worm.Win32.Nyxem.e [Kaspersky], W32/MyWife.d@MM [McAfee], W32/MyWife.d@MM!M24 [McAfee], Win32/Mywife.E@mm [Microsoft], W32/Small.KI@mm [Norman], Tearec.A [Panda Software], W32/Nyxem-D [Sophos], WORM_GREW.{A, B} [Trend Micro]

In theory, as of 1/17/2006, the fix has been implemented on all anti-virus programs, but they never know exactly what will happen until it happens - sort of like life, eh?
