This and That Technology Tips
Googling your World, Getting rid of spam

July 27, 2006
Volume 6: Issue 6

Hey all,

Welcome to another newsletter from In The Moment Computing. We’re starting two parallel series of newsworthy items: a tutorial on Google’s services and a 4 step plan for Spam Prevention. I’m sure there are even a few spammers reading this ezine. But take heart, my loyal readers, if you follow all of my steps you will reduce your spam by 99% like I have.

Enjoy,

Clyde Lerner

We will be profiling all the wonderful tools Google has to offer – 99% of them are at no charge – over the next several ezines. Try ‘em out – you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Many of these are web-based – so it doesn't matter if you have a Mac, Windows or Linux machine.

Now, on with the show!

Google Tips – Part I in a series

So what really is a google? A "Googol" is the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros. It's a very large number. Everything you needed to know about Google (but afraid to ask) can be found at http://www.google.com/about.html. This encompasses almost everything I talk about below- but not everything.

Didn't get the answer you were looking for via a one or two word search? Then this advanced search will certainly come in handy for any type of research you may find yourself looking into: http://www.google.com/advanced_search

Another helpful option for any type of web search is to ask questions and get "paid for" answers - . Some recent answers: How to submit an article to a magazine: http://www.tinyurl.com/j2m64; 3 calculus problems: http://www.tinyurl.com/gag65; Who wrote the Spanish lyrics for "Por Ti Seré"?; http://www.tinyurl.com/j9yqu - have some fun with it! Pay anywhere between $2 and $200 for an answer. Check it out at: http://answers.google.com/

Treo 650 Course – Learning for the rest of us

Our next Treo 650 Course is August 7, 8, and 10, 2006. You will learn how the Palm Operating System works, make sure you get all your emails, how to surf the web, look up phone numbers without paying $2/call, instant messaging (Yahoo, Google, MSN, AOL, ICQ, etc…) and lots more. To sign up for the class, go to http://www.itmcomputing.com/webinars.php

SPAM - Part I – Spam management

The first level in spam management is to get the emails out of your Inbox. The following 4 programs are high on our list of ways to get it out of there. This doesn't prevent the flood from coming – just redirects the water.

Cloudmark Deskbar (Outlook and Outlook Express only) - found at http://cloudmark.com/desktop/ , is an anti-spam toolbar. It’s one of the largest spam communities in the world and helps everyone in its network by creating a database of all the spam emails its members receive. Cloudmark then blocks those emails from the rest of its network- so they'll never have to see them. It ranks each member of the community based on valid/invalid spam submissions to insure accuracy of prevention.

eTrust Anti-Spam (formerly Qurb) (Outlook & Outlook Express Users) – If you use Outlook, you will want to check this out. It works by filtering your Inbox and getting rid of spam. It’s easier than email filters. It updates your “safe-sender” lists automatically as you pick and choose whom you want or don’t want to get email from. Take a look for yourself at http://www.qurb.com/

Trendmicro – (Outlook and Outlook Express Users) Check it out at www.trendmicro.com Offers a large variety of protection- from spam, to viruses, Trojans, etc. Because of this, its services are recommended for use in any home or office. It comes free as part on Trend PC-Cillin Internet Security Suite 2006, an ITM recommendation.

Spamnix(Eudora User only) Great Eudora Spam Filter - this works for me 99% of the time catching SPAM: http://www.spamnix.com/

Saving Time, Frustration and Gas
Send a printed greeting card for about a $1

Your mother’s birthday is in 8 days. You have deadlines – you have to work – you can’t break away to go to the greeting card/department store. You know just getting there will use up a gallon of gas – which basically doubles the price of the card. So, as you’re gearing up to go out in the blistering heat, you remember there’s an awesome service that Clyde shares with people he knows. It’s call Send Cards With Ease or www.sendcardswithease.com . For about $1 (no traveling involved), you sit down at your computer – pick a card – write the card in your own handwriting font – and have us print it, stuff it, lick it and send it to your mom – anywhere in the world. All for $1 including postage. Heck – if you want – you can even include a Starbucks Gift card. Contact us at www.sendcardswithease.com or call 408.732.8500 today – we've already set up a free gift account for you!
