This and That Technology Tips
Day Light Savings Time is Coming Early, Roboform (sort of) for the Mac

March 4, 2007
Volume 7: Issue 2

Only 7 more days until Day Light Saving Time (DST) or as we in the biz like to call it DST. Did you know DST is coming 3 weeks earlier this year (March 11 - this Sunday) then in years past and will be ending 1 week later on Sunday, November 4th (which will make it an interesting Halloween).  Because of this change, you'll need to update your computer and lots of your tech gadgets. Some people are so crazy about this issue, they've dedicated sites to repeal it.   Quote from Cnet article listed below: New signature for phones: 'Please note, if I (am) an hour late or an hour early for my meeting with you, please understand, its not my fault, it's my government.' We're dedicating this issue primary to this daylight savings time change.

Enjoy,

Clyde

Day Light Savings Time is early this year
The times they are a Changing

Congress has extended daylight-saving time to save energy. This year it will start March 11 and will end Nov. 4. The change will affect the clock and calendar functions in computer operating systems and all types of tech gadgets.. Here are some places to learn how to make sure your system shows the right time.

DST start and end dates prior to 2007:

  • Starts at 2:00 A.M. on 04/02/06 (first Sunday in April)
  • Ends at 2:00 A.M. on 10/29/06 (last Sunday in October)
DST start and end dates beginning in 2007 (This Sunday)
  • Starts at 2:00 A.M. on 03/11/07 (second Sunday in March)
  • Ends at 2:00 A.M. on 11/04/07 (first Sunday in November)

The bottom line for the majority of you regarding Windows Software. Tech Devices to follow

Windows Vista - you're okay
Windows XP - Service Pack 2 - run all "windows updates" (don't have to do IE7, though) and system will update automatically
Windows XP - Service Pack 1 - update to Service Pack 2, then follow instructions for SP2
Windows '98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 - You'll have to manually update time with each change

Apple
Panther and Tiger(OS X 10.3 - 10.4.5 and upwards) have been patched, as long as you've been accepting automatic OS updates. If you haven't you'll need to update time manually.

Roboform for the Mac, sort of - 1 passwd
Great Password Keeper – much better then Key Chain

There I was using my Mac, wishing I had roboform for my password storage. Firefox does have password storing and Firefox fills in forms, but it's just not the same. So, I found a cool product called 1passwd. It integrates with 5 Mac-based browsers, has multiple identities, stops phishing, and integrates with a cool program sold by the same company called AllBook Marks. This program allows you to store bookmarks and use them in multiple Mac-based browsers.  It also integrated nicely with the 1passwd program. Another great option to keeping bookmarks in multiple browser is of course Del.Icio.US which allows you to have a toolbar in any browser and is OS-independent.
