Ramadan goes mobile – Mobile Apps for Ramadan and Muslims

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, reserved by Muslims for prayerful fasting and reflection. For those who seek a spiritual retreat in the palm of their hand, many apps are available for the iPhone

My apologies in advance for any misspellings as I don't know many of these terms.

Ramadan Preparation
As the beautiful month of Ramadan approaches this year, there are several things Muslims can do to prepare themselves spiritually and physically for the month

Ramadan Daily Dua
Al-Khawarizimi Software, honors the holy month of Ramadan with an application to help Muslims browse and recite Duas specific to each day of Ramadan. Also offers Duas for Iftar and Sahoor along with Ramadan traditionals.

Stop Texting and Driving...By Using Software

Maybe the DMV should have an “Oath of Licensure” that all drivers have to pledge before being issued their licenses. It could say “I, (and state your name), solemnly promise to uphold the safety of all people on the road, in my car and myself – with liberty and justice for all!” ...

...The last bit might be going a little far with the liberty and justice clause. But I like to imagine a world where people who drive really COMMIT to the drive. They do it and take it seriously. Did you know that anyone is almost four times as likely to die in a car accident, than a plane. But imagine if we held ourselves as accountable for our personal and public safety as we hold pilots, public transit officials.

This month marks the second year that California has made Hands-Free driving a must for all motorists who want to socialize while driving. This funny video about “the things we can accomplish driving, now that our hands are free” went viral here, soon after law wen into effect. Not-so-funny statistic: Texting while driving is the #1 killer of teen-age drivers between 17 and 21.

We all wear different hats in different roles. Are you a driver? If you drive and that’s your role at any point, commit to doing your job. Yes, it feels easy much of the time. But the none of your “other hats” – your distractions - will ever carry the worth any loss that comes from a car accident, no matter how minor or serious the crash. Commit yourself to the job before you. Sure, take a pledge. And if you feel like you need a tool to help you with your commitment, don’t be afraid to use one. Here are some suggestions for tools to curb your multi-tasking ambitions:

iZUP is a mobile application that helps drivers avoid distractions caused by their mobile phones. For about $4.95-9.95 per month (depending on what carrier and phone you have), this product holds text messages, e-mails and calls while you’re driving, yet always allows unlimited access to 911 and a list of authorized phone numbers. The software development firm that created the product, Illume donates five percent of net proceeds to organizations that educate people on the dangers of cell phone use while driving. iZup works with all major smartphone carriers and various phone models.

CellSafety ($9.99) can be installed on Blackberries, Android, and Nokia S60 phones. CellSafety must have been created by concerned and proactive parents. The service boasts instant text or email notifications to parents “whenever there is a concern”; message monitoring prevents sexting, pedophiles, cyber-bullying, suicide or gun talk; GPS Tracking so you can know where your child is 24/7 from anywhere in the world, as well as “Virtual Fences” to let you know when your child enters or leaves defined perimeters. Of course, my favorite features are the No Texting and Driving technology (which permits texting within a car, only with exclusive permission from guardians) and No Texting Zones which blocks texting in certain zones. This software also stores location history (GPS-tracked) for up to several days, porn filters, and a Speed Alert to let you know if the phone was ever traveling over the speed limit. Don’t worry, it still allows unlimited access to 911 calls.

Zoom Safer ($2.99/month or $25 one-time fee) Zoom Safer activates automatically or manually when driving, locks the keypad to prevent texting or emailing while driving and filters inbound calls based on priority. This software ensures hands-free use for all phone calls, sends auto-replies to unanswered calls, emails, and texts. It can also notify family and social networks when user starts and stops driving.

Text Blocker offers a free version of similar software and upgrades costing as most as $99/year. $99 sounds like a lot but safety, peace of mind and healthy drivers hold a much higher value!

Think you don’t need software because you’re good at texting while driving? Gauge your distraction levels with this online simulator similar software and upgrades costing as most as $99/year. $99 sounds like a lot but safety, peace of mind and healthy drivers hold a much higher value!

WTF is this guy doing? Hope he's not on MY freeway

Droid X – New Android phone by Verizon

New System Purchase Advice. The Droid X arrived yesterday at Verizon stores nationwide. Once you hold this baby in your hand, you’ll say, “I know I’ve heard of iPhone 4, is that the phone that came out last year?” (Even though it just came out last month).

Droid X Features:

Screen Size – a much bigger screen than any other phone at 4.3" (iPhone – 3.5", flip’s largest 3.0")

Phone Quality – has not one, not two, but 3 speakers which helps eliminate background noise and give better , crisper quality of voice (especially in speakerphone mode)

Shoots HD video - connects easily to your computer or TV to play HD Video (can you say “bye, bye Flip camera?”)

Camera - Has 5.0 MP camera, Dual Flash, and 1 x Optical (first time I’ve seen Optical zoom on phone camera)

Memory - 8 G of built-in memory + Free 16 G SD card – total of 24 G (iPhone – for $199-16G; 32 G – $299 can’t upgrade memory; Flip, can’t add memory)

Mobile Hot Spot - ability to turn phone into a mobile hotspot where up to 5 people can share wireless access using your phone (extra monthly charge of $19/month for this feature, which you can turn this feature on or off, each month as needed. without penalty.)

Battery - Removable (all non-iPhone phones usually have this “deluxe” feature). Allows you to carry extra batteries as needed or if battery dies, for $0, you can replace it.

Typing is easier – phone is Swype enabled – you don’t have to take hand off keyboard to go to next word.

Flash Support – with Android 2.2 upgrade (comes with Android 2.1) – should be available free over-the-air upgrade by end of August. You can actually see ALL websites (at least 25% of sites are inaccessible by iPhone who refuses to put on flash). Google doesn’t seem to have ego-involvement in decision

Official Press Release for Droid X.

I’ve played with the Droid X – it’s so cool. For me, personally, I’m waiting for the Droid 2, which was due August 23rd. It will look quite a bit like the Droid X, AND has a physical keyboard. Physically, it’s the same size as the droid, but has double the internal memory and double the processor speed of the Droid.

For the Geeks out there, the Droid X and Droid 2 have an ARM, TI RISC Processor.

Costs?

$299 with $100 rebate. If you buy in store, you get $100 gift card – ugh! If you buy on-line, you buy phone for $199 – no rebate, yeah!
$99 – If you’re a long time Verizon customer, they kick in another $100. I’ve been with Verizon 10+ years, so I get this discount. Can’t remember AT&T ever offering this type of discount.

Pricing for the Droid 2 is the same as the Droid X – $199. Surprisingly, the Droid 2 is a little heavier (0.5 oz) (probably because of the physical keyboard) than the Droid X. The Droid 2 has one more feature the Droid X doesn’t have – built-in wireless, which can save you a few $$ on data fees.

Looking for a custom application for your desktop where you have to sign in to buy stuff? Sorry, Google Apps Marketplace is just another website where you can easily browse through 65000+ apps without having to open up an iTunes-like app.

So, what are you waiting for? Ditch your current phone and get a Droid X today!
